LOCKWOOD TRIES FOR DUOPOLY IN HUNTSVILLE, AL
Lockwood Broadcast Group is trying to put together a duopoly in Huntsville-Decatur-Florence, Ala., by buying a second station there to go along with its CW affiliate, WHDF.
According to the FCC filing seeking approval of the deal, Lockwood has agreed to purchase WYLE from Karen Snead-White for $1.2 million. WYLE has been dark since February.
Lockwood has asked the FCC for a waiver of its small-market duopoly ban, citing the financial hardship of WYLE.
“Without the waiver, WYLE will remain silent, thereby robbing a small market of one of its few remaining outlets,â Lockwood says in the filing.
Lockwood is principally owned by James L. Lockwood.
Lockwood President Dave Hanna could not be reached for comment.
The WYLE deal continues the station-trading activity at the small Hampton, Va.-based station group.
Last year, Lockwood sold WUPV Richmond-Petersburg, Va., to Southeastern Media Holdings for $47 million.
It followed that sale with the purchase of WQCW, the CW affiliate in the Charlestown-Huntington, W.Va., market, for $5.3 million.
Lockwood also owns KTEN, the NBC affiliate in the Sherman, Texas-Ada, Okla., market.
