LIN STATIONS TO SPONSOR 'DAY OF CARING'
LIN TV Corp. announced today that "LIN TV's Day of Caring" will be held on Aug. 28, when employees from 30 television stations in 18 markets will roll up their sleeves to clean, paint, repair and volunteer their time to help people in need.
The Day of Caring, LIN said, “is a company-wide effort focused on promoting the spirit and value of volunteerism, increasing the awareness of each station's nonprofit partners, and demonstrating our commitment to the community.”
"LIN TV's stations take a leadership role in local community service," said Vincent L. Sadusky, president and chief executive officer of LIN TV. "Our company has a strong philanthropic culture and everyone is actively involved in efforts to improve the quality of life in the communities in which we serve, not just this one day, but everyday."
Following is a description of each station’s activities:
KRQE-TV & KASA-TV Albuquerque, N.M.
Employees will volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House Charities, a nonprofit organization that provides a temporary home away from home for families with ill or injured children being cared for at an Albuquerque medical facility.
KXAN-TV & KNVA-TV Austin, Texas
The stations will partner with Hands on Housing to help make significant repairs to an elderly woman's home.
WALA-TV & WBPG-TV Mobile, Ala.-Pensacola, Fla.
The stations will partner with the Southeast chapter of Volunteers of America to help rebuild the home of a local elderly couple whose home was destroyed during Hurricane Katrina.
WAND-TV Decatur, Ill.
Station employees will be working with the Macon County Health Department and the Near East Neighborhood Partnership to repair two owner/occupied homes and conduct general neighborhood clean-up.
WANE-TV Fort Wayne, Ind.
Employees will help to prepare a historical building for future use as a museum and office space for a local preservation organization, ARCH, whose mission is to restore and preserve buildings and sites of historical significance.
WAVY-TV & WVBT-TV Portsmouth-Norfolk, Va.
The stations will partner with The Citizen's Committee to Protect the Elderly to clean up, paint and landscape a residential home.
WDTN-TV Dayton, Ohio
Employees will be helping to improve the Fairview Middle School as part of a city-wide community service project involving local residents and key community leaders.
WISH-TV, WNDY-TV and WIIH-CA Indianapolis
The stations will partner with Rupert's Kids of Indianapolis to improve and enhance a Child Development Center and playground at the Christamore House, a United Way agency focused on providing family development for area residents.
WIVB-TV & WNLO-TV Buffalo, N.Y.
The stations will be teaming up with AmeriCorps to clean and paint the Our Lady of Loretto School.
WLFI-TV Lafayette, Ind.
Employees will be working with Habitat for Humanity on one of its "build sites" located in the south end of Lafayette.
WLUK-TV Green Bay, Wis.
Employees will be on-site at the new Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity housing project, helping to frame the inside of a house and a garage.
WOOD-TV Gand Rapids-Battle Creek, Mich.
The station will be partnering with Repcolite and Home Repair Services, a nonprofit that provides services for families in need, to paint the exterior of a house for a family in need.
WPRI-TV & WNAC-TV Providence, R.I.
Employees will be volunteering at the Meeting Street School, an internationally acclaimed educational innovator for students of all abilities.
WTHI-TV Terre Haute, Ind.
The station is teaming up with Graffiti Busters, a local group funded by the 14th and Chestnut Community Center, to clean up many parts of the city.
WTNH-TV & WCTX New Haven-Hartford, Conn.
Employees will be volunteering at LEAP (Leadership, Education & Academic in Partnership) to install carpet, replace kitchen flooring and build a backyard fence. LEAP provides academic and social enrichment program for children living in high-poverty urban neighborhoods.
WUPW-TV Toledo, Ohio
Employees will be working at the East Toledo Family Center building on a retainer wall, planting trees and painting the East Toledo Senior Center.
WWHO-TV Columbus, Ohio
Employees will be working at a Habitat for Humanity house construction site to build a home for a local family in need.
WWLP-TV Springfield, Mass.
Employees will be collecting non-perishable food items and bringing the donated food to the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts. The donations will be distributed to the Food Bank's 400 member agency programs.Copyright 2007 TV Newsday, Inc. All rights reserved.
