WTOC Newsman Killed Covering Accident
SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A longtime television newsman in Savannah has died after being struck by a car while covering an accident story.
Steven Shoob, a reporter for Raycom's CBS affiliate WTOC, was killed early Monday while returning to his car near the accident scene on Interstate 95.
WTOC News Director Larry Silbermann says Shoob had responded to reports of a serious wreck on I-95 southbound near the South Carolina line.
According to a story on the WTOC's Web site, in his overnight role, Shoob worked as a one-man band, shooting, writing and coordinating stories for himself.
"As great a journalist as he was, he was an even better person,'' said Silbermann. "The passion and compassion he showed on stories was the passion and compassion he showed as a person. There's no way you could ever fill that void that's going to be felt from this day forward in the WTOC news department.''
Shoob was born and raised in Savannah and graduated from Savannah High School. He started working at WTOC more than 20 years ago. In 2003, he won three Associated Press awards and the station's first Emmy.
