Young Broadcasting Up For Auction

Station group owner Young Broadcasting Inc. faces auction on July 14 in New York, according to its attorneys. The company probably will be sold or reorganized as a whole, according to the Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal law offices. Attorneys say there has been a "healthy amount of interest" in the auction, being undertaken at secured lenders' insistence.

Retrans Fees Seen Rising To $1.2B By '11

Only six of the Top 50 TV station groups posted revenue growth, according to the latest BIAfn/TVNewsday 2008 ranking by revenue: Post-Newsweek, McGraw-Hill, Dispatch, Capitol, Griffin and CCA. Overall, BIAfn says, revenue fell 6.5% to $20.1 billion in 2008 and will plunge another 17.3% to $16.6 billion this year. And don't look for significant growth until 2012, it says.

Gannett Will Cut More Than 1,000 Jobs

Gannett Co., the largest U.S. newspaper publisher by daily circulation, will cut between 1,000 and 2,000 jobs out of its 41,500-person work force in response to continuing revenue declines, according to a person familiar with the company's thinking. The cuts will come from the U.S. Community Publishing division, which consists of Gannett's more than 80 local dailies.

WTVT Tampa Lays Off Six Staffers

Tampa Fox O&O WTVT laid off six workers including four staffers from its newsroom. Skeptics predicted that job reductions might follow the start of a new local news service allowing WTVT to team with rivals WFTS and WTSP to gather footage of routine news events. But WTVT GM Bill Schnieder insisted the job reductions and the LNS were not connected.
